Rajeev Masand: Why is so much of filmmaking today a gimmick?

Ram gopal verma:
In the case of Jan Gan Rann, I don’t think it is a gimmick. The film is about the media, which is a communication point between the people and the power of the country. So to that extent more or less that is what the content of the film is about. And I think the song represents what the film is about.

Rajeev Masand: It seems to me as if nothing is sacred to you. Why would you fool around with the National Anthem to promote your film?

Ram Gopal Varma: See, I fundamentally disagree with the word fooling around. Now what does the word ‘fooling around’ mean? If I ridicule the anthem or try to demean it or show it in a bad light or make a joke out of it, then you can use the word fooling around.

The whole point in Tagore’s National Anthem is this is how the country should be and what it should represent. And the media and the politicians also exactly know what the country is going through. So I thought it would be interesting to basically use the National Anthem as a platform to draw attention to the state of our nation.

Slumdog Millionaire star Frieda Pinto who has been romantically linked to her co-star Dev Patel says he is a great guy. However, she does not say that she is in a relationship with Dev.

A few days ago, Dev’s mother confirmed that Pinto-Patel who play childhood sweethearts in Danny Boyle’s Mumbai potboiler are dating each other. Pinto who is shooting for Israeli film ‘Miral’ in Tel Aviv was pictured cozying-up to Patel during a lunch date.

But the 24-year-old star still calls Dev as her co-star, reported a website. Pinto said, “One thing I have found difficult is the lack of privacy. I’m constantly asked if Dev and I are in a relationship, and I don’t know what to say.”

She further added, “He’s a really, really, great guy, and I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful co-star. He’s adorable, and a good friend. He always will be.”

“I was engaged to actor Rohan Antao, but we broke up at the end of last year. Things happen and you have to learn to deal with them,” Pinto said.

She’s just two films old — Om Shanti Om and Bachna Ae Haseeno — but already Bollywood is predicting that Deepika Padukone is going to be the next big thing on the silver screen.

The lanky model from Bangalore has made people sit up and notice her. She’s as much known for her personal life as she is for her professional progress, because Deepika is focussed on whatever she does. Now, audiences are waiting to see how she shapes up in Chandni Chowk To China opposite superstar Akshay Kumar. BT spoke to the actress and got her to reveal her innermost feelings…

How was last year, your first in Bollywood?

Wonderful. I have learned and got so much in such a short time. My excitement and anxiety is the same as it was before my debut film. I think, even 15 years later, I will still have Friday night fever.

Like in OSO, you’re playing a double role in Chandni Chowk To China…

Yeah, I play Meow — a sexy and brash girl, and Sakhi — who is very tacky with over-the-top makeup. They’re contrasting personalities, but very interesting. That filmmakers believe I can carry off a double role so early in my career, is a huge boost for my confidence.

You learned martial arts for this film… serious stuff?

I was always into sports so that helped me pick this up easily. I started training in jiu-jitsu six months before shooting. It was torturous in the beginning. But I think it’s all paid off. I won’t say I’m an expert, but yes, I can take care of myself. I can bajao and lagao with my fists and kicks!

You shot on the Great Wall of China…

I always thought I would go there as a tourist, but look… this is the first Indian film to be shot there and I’m part of it! I took lots of pictures, videos, of myself and with tourists.

Rumours are that Ranbir and you have problems…

Rubbish! I celebrated my birthday with him yesterday. I’m very happy and secure in my relationship with him.

Is there any marriage commitment?

Of course. We have discussed it. But right now both of us need to focus on our careers. What tomorrow holds for us I do not know. I’m committed to my career till the end of 2010.

You seem to have patched up with Sonam Kapoor…

There wasn’t any fight for us to patch up. Our films released at the same time. Today we have become close friends. We hook up, go to the spa, watch films and generally party together. She is a warm and sweet girl.

You’ve worked with Shah Rukh and Akshay. Next?

My next film is with Saif and is releasing next year. I have signed one more with Akshay called Housefull. I want to work with Aamir and Salman Khan, too. These actors are getting hotter and better with age.

She has been catapulted to star status with her debut in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. But Anushka Sharma says she is a simple girl just like her character in the movie and has no plans to move into a plush home as she is enjoying her stay in the army quarters here.

“I kept coming to Mumbai for modelling assignments. I decided to move into Mumbai a year ago with my mom, since my dad is posted out. I haven’t bought my place. Right now I’m very comfortable in the army quarters. I don’t feel the need to move from where I am,” Anushka told IANS.

The actress, who has signed one more film with Yash Raj Films, says she was lucky to be brought up in Bangalore.

“Otherwise army officers, who give their lives for the country, could be posted anywhere in the back of beyond. That gets really tough on their kids. Me and my brother (who used to be a state-level cricketer) got the best of education in Bangalore,” said Anushka.

Directed by Aditya Chopra, the romance drama starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka hit bull’s eye at the box office and the collections are going strong even after three weeks.

Ask her how she managed to be so natural in her first film, Anushka said: “All the while I was modelling in Bangalore, maybe there was an actor lurking within me. I’m crazy about my modelling work. I love the ramp and the backstage banter. I moved to Mumbai a year ago. Movies were not a priority. I don’t come from a film background, don’t know how the industry works. I didn’t know anyone here.”

She didn’t have to make a strenuous effort to act.

“Even modelling is a kind of performance. On the ramp you are representing a concept. In a film, you’re projecting an individual. But the transition wasn’t hard for me. Because in real life I’m as simple as the girl I play in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Yes, I do like to dress up and walk the ramp. But that isn’t the real me.”

The newcomer is receiving compliments from all and sundry, but says the best came from Yash Chopra himself.

“He came up to me and said mine was one of the best performances he had seen by a debutante. He placed his hand on my head while saying this. So he was blessing me,” said Anushka.

Unlike other Yash Raj Films heroines, she was not presented with the poised finesse and sophistication associated with the banner.

The newcomer defends the banner, saying: “You’re right. Even when actresses are presented as seedhi-saadhi (girl next door) in a Yash Raj film, they are glamorous. And coming from a glamour background I wouldn’t have minded being glossy in my first film. But you know what?

“This was such a huge opportunity. I couldn’t have asked for more. I fell in love with my character and the film. It’s a dream role for any debutante. I can always get into a chiffon sari in the next Yash Raj movie. Or the one after that….”

Although Rab Ne… is Anushka’s first film, she wasn’t over-instructed for her role.

“Adi never told me what to do beyond a point. In fact, he gave me the liberty to interpret my character the way I wanted after making me read the lines. Imagine a newcomer getting so much freedom in her first film!

“I must have given Ravi Chandran (director of photography) so much grief. I knew nothing about camera angles. I didn’t even understand focus marks. Shah Rukh was doing that for me. Adi and Shah Rukh made things so comfortable for me. These things matter a lot when you’re starting out.”

Commenting on her co-star, Anushka says she was always a huge Shah Rukh fan.

“My dad is in the army and when they would’ve these functions in the mess, I’d dance to Shah Rukh’s Kitabe bahut si padhi hogi from Baazigar. I must’ve been three at that time.

“I wasn’t just Shah Rukh’s fan. I’m his big admirer. I always loved the way he conducted himself. Now after having worked with him, I love him even more. Rab Ne… was like my school where Shah Rukh and Adi were my teachers.”

‘Rock On’ has turned into a rocking success at the box office and no wonder, it is gaining a cult status for itself. While writing and directing the film, did Abhishek Kapoor ever feel that he was pushing the envelope to such an extent that one day ‘Rock On’ would turn into a cult film?

“Not really”, says Abhishek after giving it a momentary thought, “When you start making a film, you don’t think things like ‘I am gonna make a great film’ or ‘My film would be such that it would be remembered by generations to come’. Clichéd as it may sound but the fact is that you just want to make an entertaining film with all honesty. This is what happened during my attempt with ‘Rock On’ as well and all factors came together to make the film a huge success that it is today.”

How did he actually believe in himself after a disastrous directorial debut two years back with ‘Aryan – The Unbreakable’? Didn’t he feel like taking a more conventional route after his debut project didn’t quite win him many accolades?

“I won’t deny that I was shattered after the poor box office returns of ‘Aryan – The Unbreakable’. My self confidence went quite low and it took my quite some time to gather myself all over again and begin work on my next project. Agree that the film had it’s flaws and ‘Rock On’ is a far superior film in comparison. Still, I know that those who saw the film didn’t really hate it. It was horrible promotion which completely killed it even before it’s release. There were so many delays and rescheduling in terms of theatrical release and by the time it arrived at theaters, no one even knew about it.”

That’s not quite the case with ‘Rock On’ though about which everyone is talking even as the film is approaching 50 days.

“Ask me”, smiles Abhishek, “At the moment I am in a surreal state and don’t know whether I am coming in and going out of a place. There is so much happening around me and I am enjoying everything which the life is offering me today. Guess it would still be some more days at least when all this would sink in. Till then I am gonna continue to ‘rock on’

After almost a gap of one and half years Preity is back with a more mature outlook towards life. And that can be made out in her forthcoming films. Currently her three films are due for release, let’s talk to her and know more about them.

Q-It’s almost after one and half years that your three films are going to be released?
A-Yes, alongwith Heroes there are two more films that are going to be released. After Heroes which is releasing in Diwali it’s going to be Deepa Mehta’s “Heaven and Earth”and then Jaanu Barua’s “Har Pal” will be released. In all these films Heroes and Har Pal are completely commercial films but Heaven and Earth is a realistic film. Its based on household violence. In both the films Heroes and in Heaven and Earth I’m playing the role of a Punjabi girl. The characters that I’m playing in both these films are different forms of women. It’s chirpy and bubbly in one while serious and stronger in the other. The character of Har Pal is something very different from what I have played till now. It reminded me of Kya Kehna.

Q-What is the specialty of these three films?
A-The specialty about these films would be that they will have a place in my personal film library. I’m really proud about these films as in them I have challenged the actor inside me. Moreover in this era of only commercial films these films are a good combination of reality and commercial and I list them with Taare Zammen Par, Rang de Basanti, Wednesday and Munna Bhai. And also the best part about Heroes is that in spite of being an army based film it has not bad mouthed Pakistan in any way.

Q-What would you like to say about Deepa Mehta?
A-What do I say about her, she is one of the finest directors in the world. I always thought about her as a director who could never go wrong. This was proved at Toronto after the screening of our film Heaven and Earth when the entire crowd there gave a standing ovation.

Q-In all the three films you are playing the role of a typical Indian girl, which of these is the real you?
A-Amongst the three, Kuljeet of Heroes is very close coz she is shown patriotic just ,like me. But I feel just by saying any one of these characters resemble me would be unfair. More than my characters I trust these films.

Q-That means you are sure to win the national award this year?
A-(laughing) I don’t know. I would want the viewers to be my award. I would like them to go and watch these films. And I would personally request every man and women to definitely watch Deepa Mehta’s Heaven and Earth.

Q-Its heard that in Heroes al the heroines are sidelined, is it true?
A- Absolutely not, there is nothing like this. These are all personal views of the media. They have a habit of hyping the smallest of issues. I would like to appreciate them as they have managed to hit the bull’s eye once again. Just like Veer Zaara was Shah Rukh and Preity’s film and in every poster the two of them were seen, in the same way in this film also the heroine plays a very strong character. but Heroes is actually as the name suggests a film basically on the heroes.

Q-After almost one and half year you were to be seen in “last Lear” and now in all your forthcoming films you are seem to be excited about doing all different characters. Why at this time?
A-what do you mean?

Q-I meant that were you offered such roles or you had decided that you want to do something different?
A-Yes, I had decided I wanted to do something different. because of this decision I also refused a lot of big banners which I don’t want to mention now. Whereas media had already started spreading the news that Preity is not getting any good offers and that she is planning to get married. The fact was that I had taken a one year time off from my directors for the IPL as I dint want to discuss things before they could work out. In midst of all this I always thought in my heart that I wanted to do something different that would inspire me. Lot of my friends were annoyed and said that I was really crazy to do something like this.

Q-But why did you decide to do something like this?
A-Every single person asked me the same question at that time. And I answered all of them by saying that even if I fail in my expectations I would like to give myself a chance. No one would be held responsible for my failure.Everytime when someone would come up to me with a offer I would instantly agree thinking that the film sounds great, the banner is big the money is good, It was as if someone is controlling me with a remote control. This was not what my heart wanted. When I took an off for IPL I felt that these are some signals from God,coz the day I decided to do something different I got a call from Deepa Mehta asking me for Heaven and Earth.

Q-Haven’t Deepa Mehta and Rituparna Ghosh offered you any roles before?
A-Of course they had offered me. Even when I was doing hard core commercial films I did get offers from big directors for such roles. At that time I had told them that I want to be completely dedicated to what I’m doing ,if im unable to give my hundred percent to the film then that would be a minus point for the film.

Q-Why did you do a cameo role in Mr. and Mrs. Khanna and Rab ne Bana di Jodi?
A-As far as Mr. and Mrs. Khanna is concerned the director of the film is a very close friend of mine and he always wanted me to work with him. But I was so obsessed with these three forthcoming films of mine that I refused him. Now when he came up to me with this small role I couldn’t refuse him. For Rab ne Bana di jodi I wouldn’t like to comment on that film. – Rajnee Gupta (SAMPURN)

Sambhavna Seth: The drama for the ‘Drama Queen’, Sambhavna Seth has finally come to an end. She now breathes fresh air (which she couldn’t in Bigg Boss house) and finally gets to see different people around her. Gone are the days of her ‘amusement and abusement’ in the Bigg Boss house. We get into a serious chat with her where she recalls her ‘melodrama’ in the Bigg Boss house.

She starts by saying that she lived each and every moment in that house. She did have some bad encounters though. She said she enjoyed doing the tasks which were assigned to her. She also had fun when it came the topic was entirely became ‘gossip section’

We decided to jump into she rivals in that house. To start with the lot-
Her Biggest Rival: Payal Rohatgi.

“Payal is a sympathy gainer. She is no less than a beggar. The difference is that the beggar goes to various people and collect money and in her case its sympathy which she dies for. Payal said that she is well educated and an engineer and stuffs. Will a well educated person behave in this manner”? question Sambhavna.

She continues with a furious face, “Payal told me that I am a down market, low class girl. She even told me a ‘Baazaru Aurat’. The fact is that all these terms were given by her but it suited her the best. It can be recalled that Payal was the one who had done C-grade films like ‘Tauba Tauba’ and many others. She says she wants an image change. She wanted to show that she can do all the household work and even clean dishes and stuffs. She was dying to be termed as ‘A Decent Girl’.

“She used to wear a two-piece bikini and attract all guys and have fun with them in the pool. She was always interested in showing off her curves to people. She even got massaged by Rahul. She is the ‘Undisputed Queen of C-grade films’”, says Sambhavna with a happy and satisfied face then.

Rahul Mahajan:

“I don’t know if Rahul is really that famous as he pretends to be. He says he’s a big personality. But I personally think Rahul can win the Bigg Boss also. The best part that many don’t know is that he too says that he will win. Rahul said that he had already set the nomination and has a ‘kind of setting’ with the channel”.

Sambhavna recalls her first day in Bigg Boss house where Rahul came to her and said, “How many days do you want to stay, 3-4 weeks? Will your purpose be fulfilled within that period. He said that then only accordingly he will think and plan out other things.”

Sambhavna says, “That act of his was very annoying and then we decided to nominate him. He thinks too much of himself. Who the hell is he?”

Raja:

“Raja and I shared a love and hate relationship. He was good to me as well as bad for me. I was the one who took the initiative to let everyone know that Raja was not a bad person by heart. He, instead of thanking me started back stabbing me which annoyed me to the core. It was then I started my game plotting against him. But in the end I would still say that Raja is still not that bad person and is good by heart”.

Sambhavna says that Zulfi, the most silent one is still very dangerous and extremely cunning.

Zulfi:

“Zulfi and Payal are worst of the lot. Zulfi pretends a lot. He is not what he is showing. He is very very cunning. I think he knows black magic and stuffs also. He used to sit down with candles and agarbattis late in the night which was scary”, says a scared Sambhavna.

Sambhavna says she speaks her heart which many don’t like because the truth is always bitter and never better. She does confess that she had played many games in order to survive. She recollects and says that if she wont have started the ‘groupism thingy’, then she would have been voted out before Rakhi and Monica.

When asked about a sudden change in her behavior towards Raja and Ashu, Sambhavna says, “I did everything for Ehsaan ji because he was very close to me and if I would have left the house he would be in a no man’s land. It was for him I decided to bend down”

Sambhavna is happy to see people which she couldn’t past so many days, but says if given a chance (through a wild card entry) would still go back to finish some unfinished business and “kick some ass”

Qualities you look for in your man?
Honesty, good natured, helpfulness and a nice sense of humour are the ‘must haves’.

Do ‘good looks’ also find place in your list? And how high in the order?
‘Good looks’ is obviously there in my list, but it does not figure that high in the pecking order.

If you like a guy, would you make the first move?
No, I am too traditional in that the sense. If he likes me, he will have to make the first move.

Would you ‘dress to kill’ on the first date?
No, I would wear something I would be comfortable in rather than something which might attract him, but make me look like a complete fool.

Would you offer to foot half the bill on your first date?
Yes, I would definitely, but it would be up to him to accept.

What would be your reaction if girls made a pass at your guy?
I would not lose my cool for sure because if we are together, then the trust factor has to be there.

Would you like him dictating what you should wear and what not?
If he likes me, he will have to accept me as I am. So definitely, he would have no right to dictate to me.

If you and your guy had to go away from the busy life, where would you be heading out to?
We would go to Rishikesh for some serious mountaineering and river rafting. I love adventure sports.

One general trait of men you dislike?
That it’s not manly enough to cry.

Among the current Bollywood hunks, who comes nearest to your man?
That a tough question, I think I better give it a pass.

Bollywood’s girl-next-door Amrita Rao shocked all and sundry when she shed her sedate look and featured on the cover page of fashion magazine Verve in a revealing red outfit. But she says it wasn’t a conscious move to change her image.

The actress, who will be seen in a deglamourised role in her forthcoming film Welcome To Sajjanpur, featured in the July edition of the magazine.

Excerpts:

You recently shot a special song with Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor.
It’s not an item song, as people seem to think. They both made me immensely comfortable. They have their own unique dancing style. Since both are legendary actors I didn’t know whom to match steps with. So I just decided to be myself and do my own thing. I must say all of us in Short Cut were overwhelmed by Sanjay’s gesture. He came down to Mumbai only to shoot the song with us.

You did a rather bold cover for Verve magazine. What brought that on?
It wasn’t a conscious decision to be bold or anything. It all depends on how different artists envision me. If Soorajji could see me as this simple, docile small town girl in Vivah, then another person saw me the way I am on the magazine cover. And if Farah Khan hadn’t seen me as the grungy rebellious babe in Main Hoon Na after Ishq Vishk, I wouldn’t have undergone such a change of image.

But the sweet girl-next-door image stays with you?
And I’m very proud of that image. But when I did the Verve cover, people woke up to another side of me. I wouldn’t say this is a more glamorous side of me. I’d say I was glamorous in Vivah and Main Hoon Na as well, though in an ethnic way. I hope I’m able to carry off all kinds of looks. At the moment, I’m doing three films. In Shyam Benegal’s Welcome To Sajjanpur, I’m an illiterate village girl. In Anees Bazmi’s Victory, I’m a Jaisalmer girl, but at the same time she’s a medical student. So I play a small town but modern girl. I like such roles. But in Neeraj Vora’s film I’m a completely glamorous girl. It’s set in the film industry.

Why aren’t you in Sooraj Barjatya’s Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi?
I wasn’t offered that. I’d love to be in anything that Soorajji does. I consider my association with the Barjatyas to be very special. Recently, when Soorajji was watching the rushes of Ek Vivah…, he sent me a very sweet message saying he remembered my character from Vivah. So maybe I was being missed. I like that thought.

You seem to be a fragile girl. How do you withstand all the negativity in the film industry?
I don’t think I’d have been able to be what I am if it wasn’t for my mother. I started in the industry very young. I needed my mom to look into every aspect of my career. Today, I’m working with both Neeraj Vora and Shyam Benegal. Both unique in their own way!

You’re the inspiration for M.F. Husain’s latest paintings?
I think he has immortalised me. When a senior journalist informed me I was Husain saab’s latest muse and that he was painting me, I was overwhelmed. I think it was the character in Vivah that convinced Husain saab.

After a sensitive cameo act in Shaurya, you are back doing a light-hearted film like Welcome to Sajjanpur… How does it feel?
I am super duper excited (laughs). Being a part of a Shyam Benegal movie was actually a high point for me when I first read the script. He is somebody who is liked and revered by everyone in my community.

In fact, not many people know that we belong to same community and we speak the same language (Konkani). So, people like Girsh Karnad, Ananth Nag, and Shyam Benegal have always been looked upon by our community.

Then of course I happened to see Zubeidaa when I was studying and that is one film that I still count as one of my favorite films. So when Shyamji called me for this role, I didn’t ask him any questions and I just said yes to the film. Because, I so wanted to be on board under his direction.

Did you ever ask him why did he think of you for this role?
I did ask him and he said that he had seen me in Vivah and felt that I most appropriately suited the role in terms of look and age and all that he was looking for. So yes…I got lucky (laughs).

First things first, where is Sajjanpur? Does it exist or is it a fictitious place?
Whatever we have shown about Sajjanpur does exist but at the end of the day a name really doesn’t matter because there is a place called Sujjanpur in India and there is another place called Sarhanpur in India.

Like wise there is Sajjanpur; the film set in Sajjanpur, is thoroughly entertaining and you will just laugh out loud and leave the cinema hall feeling good.

Not just that, in fact when you come out of the theatres, you will realize that in retrospect, some of the things which you laughed about during the film are some of the grave issues that our country is facing.

Even today in the so-called modern India there are villages like Sajjanpur which face the issues that the film portrays.

What is the film all about?
The film is a fascinating story of the people living in this village called Sajjanpur. Mahadev (Shreyas Talpade) is the protagonist of the film and he’s the common factor amongst all the characters in the film. He is the only literate guy in the village and everybody comes to him to write their letters.

Apart from being a light hearted comedy, the film is a satire to some extent. We are supposed to play ourselves. Nobody is trying too hard to be funny or resorting to slapstick comedy.

The village Sajjanpur is full of mad-hatters and we want people to come and forget their own world come into this small village and have fun with us (laughs).

You are playing a village belle for the first time. Tell us something more about your character?
I play Kamla in the film. Like I said, Kamla is illiterate and cannot read or write. She plays a potter and it’s a very rustic, earthy, rural Indian character. Sajjanpur is her world, she cannot see beyond Sajjanpur because she has never ventured out. She comes to Mahadev to write her letters and of course hilarious situation revolve around it.

You are paired with Shreyas Talpade for the first time? How was the experience working with him?
Shreyas and I bonded well throughout the making of the film. In fact, I remember, the first time I saw Shreyas was on the sets of Om Shanti Om. Farah knew that I was supposed to work with him and she called him into the van and he came in his old man get up.

That was my first glimpse of Shreyas Talpade (laughs). After that we had a couple of workshops with Mr. Shyam Benegal, which is when I started to get to know Shreyas better. Post that, on the sets, when I saw Shreyas working, he was completely into his character Mahadev.

He was not only effortless with his dialogue delivery but was also improvising on the dialect. I got very impressed and I felt that I should work very hard on my lines too (laughs).

Talking about your career, your first film Ab Ke Baras sank at the B.O., you were noticed in The Legend of Bhagat Singh, got your first big hit with Ishq Vishk, had some really big hits like Masti & Main Hoon Naa and then after a gap of few years you probably had your biggest hit with Vivah. Post Vivah, a lot of people feel your career hasn’t gone the way it should have. Do you feel the same too?
Well…to be frank…sometimes I do because post Vivah I immediately did a South film and that took away my focus and also took away a lot of my time. I wanted to do it as an experiment and to discover a different experience of acting, mouthing lines and reacting to lines you don’t understand.

I also got a chance to work with the biggest superstar of Telugu film industry Mahesh Babu so it was a good experience for me. The South Indian sensibilities are different from people in the Hindi film industry.

But still, Vivah is a film and a role that’s given me so much of positive equity among the masses and ultimately nobody can take that away from you. Even today when the film is aired on TV the TRP is soaring high.

In fact, recently, when I was shooting in Jodhpur, I came out of my van and what I see is this the whole group of people waiting for me and calling me ‘Poonam Poonam’ I think for them I will always be their Poonam.

Two of your biggest hits have been with Shahid Kapoor. Any plans to do more films with him since people feel you make a super pair?
Well, that’s the best part about it because Shahid and myself also enjoy working with each other. To top it all, its very complimenting when people walk up and say ‘Shahid- Amrita Super Hit jodi’ because in this generation perhaps we are the only pair who have this ‘Super Hit jodi’ tag line.

We have grown up watching SRK- Kajol, Aamir- Juhi, Anil- Maduri and Govinda- Karisma. It is very encouraging for both of us because when your audience actually wants to see you on-screen together then I think half of your battle is won, and its definitely an advantage.

The industry has seen a lot of new talent like Ranbir, Harman, Imran, Sikander make their presence felt. What do you think of the new, emerging talent? Any of them that you would like to work with?
I am working with Harman in Victory. I would certainly like to work with Ranbir, Imran. I think the Generation Next of Bollywood is stepping in and the young batch is just filling up.

When Shahid and I had stepped in, the Gen-next had just about shown its presence, there were not enough actors of our age to work opposite and we both faced that situation initially. Now fortunately things are changing. The more the merrier. (Laughs)
