99 is one short of a century in cricket but works brilliantly as a film.
99 starts off in the year 1999. Sachin (Kunal Khemu) and Zaramud (Cyrus Broacha) are partners in crime duplicating cell phone sim cards in a time when the call rates were sky high and even incoming calls were not free. Things take a drastic turn for them when certain circumstances force them to meet AGM (Mahesh Manjrekar) who is a cricket match bookie. Now they have to work for AGM to repay the cost of his car which they damaged after stealing it.
Meanwhile, Rahul (Boman Irani) who has his own theories in life, has lost a huge sum while betting and has to pay the lost amount to AGM.
You do not need to be a cricket expert or even a follower of the game to watch this film. Cricket is just used as a backdrop in this work of fiction which has some references to real life incidents.
The screenplay and witty dialogues are the high points of the film. It has a lot of funny scenes which leave you laughing your guts out. Though it drags in some portions, overall the film moves pretty smoothly. The editing and background music are neatly done.
The climax is a bit stretched but you hardly get to complain as it keeps you guessing as to what will happen next. The good part about the climax is the way in which each character’s track is culminated.
99 is a smartly written film full of interesting characters. Cyrus Brocha is a revelation with great comic timing. Boman Irani is reliable as usual. Kunal Khemu is pretty decent. Mahesh Manjrekar performs his part very well. Amit Mistry is another promising actor to watch out for and surely has a bright future ahead. Soha Ali Khan plays her role eficiently. Simone Singh takes a backseat. Vinod Khanna is there for only a couple of scenes.
Though one number short, 99 is as entertaining as watching Sachin Tendulkar hit a century. Do not miss this highly entertaining flick.
