Ground your feet, and brace yourselves. Or get ready to be swept away by waves of ecstasy. The Ebony Lady of Fortune has gotten a make-over, folks. The 52 nd Annual FairOne Filmfare Awards 2006 has gone exclusive. And only Bollywood’s elite will now court her in true Oscar-style – red carpet et al. Indeed she has come a long way from her early days at Shamukananda Hall, where she first dazzled the world with her starry allure and had Bollywood gods paying homage to their very own deity in unparalleled splendour. Flashbulbs captured tantalizing faces, ecstatic joy, crazed fans swooning with delight, winning moments and disappointed nominees – all in staccato flashes, moments which have been immortalized for eternity down the decades.
And this year was no exception to that euphoria which was only heightened by the brand new stylized version of the most respected Award in the film industry. This was evident at Yashraj Studios recently when the entire galaxy of Bollywood stars descended to pay their respects to their idol. And as usual, even the red carpet leading to the event was literally too dazzling for the naked eye. From Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh and Abhishek Bachchan to Sridevi, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherjee and Aishwarya Rai. The endless name-list boasted of the Who’s Who of the film industry. The event was at it smoothest best, as usual, with the best of the best not only being honoured with awards, but interspersed by some phenomenal (earlier-recorded) performances which rocked the night away. A R Rahman played DJ and singer, entertaining the glitzy crowd to their heart’s content.
And the evening definitely belonged to three films, which divided the honours between themselves: `Rang De Basanti’, `Omkara’, and `Lage Raho Munnabhai’, not surprisingly, walked away with most of the awards. While ‘RDB’ won five of the main awards (Best Film, Best Director, Best Music, Best Cinematography and Best Editing) as well as Best Actor (Critics) for Aamir Khan and the R D Burman award, Omkara notched up a staggering eight wins and `Lage Raho Munnabhai’ had five awards to its credit. The Best Actor and Best Actress awards went to Hrithik Roshan for `Dhoom 2′ and Kajol for `Fanaa’.
Hosted by none other than the Baadshah Khan himself, SRK was at his witty best throughout the sequence of events which led up to the climax. His associates in crime, –Karan Johar, Juhi Chawla and Preity Zinta had the crowds laughing away in the isles, even as they bantered on pulling each others’ legs and passing quite a few catty comments on the industry, all in good humour of course. And when the curtain finally came down, the tired but delighted audience agreed that this delectable cinematic treat had simply touched new heights this year. All in all, this was one starry gathering that will be remembered for along time indeed.
The main sponsor for the event was Fair One (Elder Pharmaceuticals), while the associate sponsors were Bisleri and Ashrafi Finance.
